What to wear for professional headshots that still feel like you
Choose clothing that supports the impression you want to make, feels comfortable, and keeps the attention on your expression.
Dress for the people you want to connect with
Think about where the photograph will be used and who will see it. An attorney’s firm biography, a creative business owner’s website, and a speaker profile may call for different clothing. The goal is to look credible in your setting and recognizable to someone who meets you.
Start with clothing you already enjoy wearing. A headshot is usually not the best time to experiment with an outfit that makes you feel unlike yourself. If your company has a dress standard, use that as your starting point.
Put fit and comfort ahead of a label
Check the fit around your shoulders, collar, and neckline. An outfit that pulls, bunches, or needs constant adjustment can distract you during the session. Try sitting and standing in it before you pack.
Bring clothing clean, pressed, and on hangers if practical. Small preparation steps can help you spend more of the session concentrating on expression and less time straightening a collar.
- Choose a neckline you feel comfortable wearing.
- Check jackets and shirts for lint, wrinkles, and loose threads.
- Bring a simple alternate layer for a different impression.
- Wear a complete outfit in case you choose a wider crop.
Choose colors with the background in mind
Solid colors are often a useful starting point because they let the viewer focus on your face. Patterns are not automatically wrong, but very small, high-contrast patterns can compete with your expression. Large logos or prominent lettering can pull attention away from you.
Consider contrast rather than a universal rule about light or dark clothing. A pale blouse may work beautifully against one background, while a darker jacket may suit another. Bring options and let us see them with the lighting and background before deciding.
Keep grooming and accessories familiar
Aim for the way you want to look when you meet a client or colleague. Keep hair and grooming recognizable. If you wear makeup, choose an approach that feels comfortable and let the lighting and natural retouching support it.
If glasses are part of your everyday appearance, bring them. Clean the lenses and include your usual pair. Jewelry can add personality, but consider whether it supports the image or becomes the first thing a viewer notices.
You do not need to arrive with a pose
Clothing is only one part of a strong headshot. Posture, expression, and the way you connect with the camera matter too. Our sessions include real-time direction and image review, so you can see what works instead of guessing.
Bring a few choices, tell us how you plan to use the images, and allow yourself to be coached. The aim is a photograph that feels like meeting you: confident, approachable, and still recognizably yourself.
